TVCT 2023 Summer Camp Guide

Happy April, Theater Fam! We made it. Winter is behind us, spring is in the air, summer is just around the corner, and you know what that means… SUMMER CAMPS! We looooove summer camps here at Treasure Valley Children’s Theater. 😍 A time to let loose, be active, make friends, have fun, learn new skills, and increase confidence… all in one week!

We could go on and ON about the benefits of theater camps for children, but we’ll spare you the 50 page essay and summarize it in 5 short bullet points:

  1. Theater camps allow kids to tap into their creativity, use their imaginations, and express themselves in artistic ways.
  2. Theater camps teach kids a variety of important soft skills that are valuable in all areas of life, such as collaboration, problem solving, communication, and active listening.
  3. Theater camps help boost a child’s confidence by encouraging them to take risks, try new things, and perform in front of an audience.
  4. Theater camps expose children to new perspectives, which broadens their understanding of the world and helps them develop empathy and respect for others.
  5. If nothing else, theater camps are SO MUCH FUN! Kids get to play games, be silly, and make memories!

So, what types of theater camps does Treasure Valley Children’s Theater offer? The short answer is… pretty much all of them! We have camps for kids of all ages and levels of experience. Now, you might be wondering (especially if you’re a non-theater parent), “What can my kid expect from a TVCT summer theater camp?” While all of our TVCT educators have their own unique styles of teaching, we all have the same mission: to empower youth to realize their full potential and use the confidence gained and skills learned to change the world.

With guidance from our five core values, we create meaningful lesson plans that encourage kids to practice respect, courage, commitment, enthusiasm, and excellence in our camps. These values are at the very heart of what we do at TVCT. All kids who go through our camps will learn about the importance of these values not just as actors, but as people. Each day we practice actor warm-ups, play fun, skill-building theater games, engage in imagination play, learn about (or revisit for our more experienced campers) the basics of theater terminology and technique, and apply a value to our work each day. In each camp, we even put together a short showcase that demonstrates what we have learned throughout the week. We love getting the chance to practice confidence and demonstrate new skills in front of a live audience.

As educators, we witness the transformational power of the arts firsthand every single day. But feedback from parents helps us to solidify what we already know— that theater truly does change lives!

“Thank you for all you do at TVCT! We have a very creative, artistic child who loves to express herself through performance based art. She is thrilled to learn and participate in these great camps!”

“I just wanted to say thank you SO much. My daughter really found a group of kindred souls at this camp and rediscovered her love and confidence with musical theater. Thank you for providing such excellent programming.”

“Thank you so much for all you do!  I was worried when Max first showed an interest in theater because he does have speech disfluency and I thought it might possibly be a terrible experience for him.  This day and age people take things too seriously at times which made me worry he either wouldn’t be included equally or that kids would be mean.  I am happy to see it has been nothing but positive and it actually helps him want to speak more and use his strategies while doing so.”

“We have loved our experience with TVCT!!!! Both my kids have taken classes and been in their productions. They have learned fantastic stage skills along with life skills. The staff is fantastic with the kids and do a great job keeping parents informed. I could go on for hours with how much our family has loved being a part of TVCT!”

“Since taking classes at TVCT, Gracie has learned to open up, be more descriptive, be more bold, and allow her creativity to fly beyond anything we as parents thought was possible.”
